Her Helm

Idea:
Her Helm is a travel guide magazine built specifically for women sailors, by me a woman sailor. As someone who’s spent years navigating boats, I realized how hard it is to find resources that actually speak to me as a woman — most sailing magazines are heavily geared toward men, whether it’s the way they talk about safety, destinations, or even just life onboard.
Her Helm is designed to give women real advice and real inspiration, all through the lens of sailing. It’s filled with curated destination ideas, solo navigation tips, safety practices, etc;
It’s a movement to make the sailing world more accessible, more enjoyable, and more empowering for women and with Her Helm, it will help women sailors navigate their journey.
Process:
Step 1:
I sketched some logo ideas for the magazine. I wanted to create a flowy vibe like the ocean while also keeping it clean and simple.
Step 2:
Created two logos in illustrator and played around with curves to portray “wave” like movements.
Step 3:
I chose a color palette that blends soft nautical tones with bold, expressive accents to reflect both the serenity and strength of women at sea.
Brand Ecosystem:
I wanted every piece of the brand to feel connected and cohesive. from the bold wave shapes to the playful type, each element brings a sense of motion and confidence that radiates throughout the brand.
Design Style:
For the style and tone, I wanted the magazine to feel groovy, flowy, and nautical — capturing the movement of being on the water — but still hold a serious, technical tone when it comes to advice / safety. I also want it to feel personal and intimate, almost like flipping through a scrap- book, where each page feels like a collection of real moments.

FOr my promotional video, I wanted to set the tone for the Her Helm magazine — bold, bright, and courageous. This should be a hype video for Women sailors to gain confidence and get inspired to travel!
